Social Media for School Leaders

During Fall Break, I have been reading this book by Dr. Brian Dixon.  It couldn't be a better time for reading this--our school is starting up a new website and it gives several great tips for principals and teachers.  After getting a new principal this year <LOVE HERE!!!> our school has suddenly entered into the 21st century!

If you are the teacher that is striving to become more technologically literate <like me> this might be a good, easy read for you and....I bet you could count it as professional development! I always list the books I read for professional growth on my professional development list.

Along with how to use the school's website to engage parents, Dr. Dixon also goes on to explain how tweeter and facebook can also be used by school personnel to keep parents informed and excited about the school year.

I also learned about something new:  Ning.  Ning allows an individual to create a private online collaborative network.  It can house blogs, discussion forums, pool questions you can even have students post their assignments there!  It sounds wonderful!  Ning starts out free, but later there is a monthly fee.

Then, lo and behold....another new idea:  Classroom portals.  Maybe I've been hiding in a technology cave!  With a classroom portal, teachers can share documents, collaborate and get this......fewer copies have to made because students and teachers can access it online!!

I could go on and on.....the book goes on to discuss how cell phones, LinkedIn, and Google + can be used safely in the school environment.  I can't wait to hand this book off <I am a firm believe in sharing books> to my principal.  I think she is going to LOVE it!
