This year I struggled to find the right texts to teach thematically during shared reading. I am limited on copies. I am limited on money, so it is hard to purchase the amount of texts I need. The stories available in the basals are great, but don't provide some of the thematic information that I need. So....I turned toward my Kindle.
I got my Kindle Fire at Christmas. It is hard for me to use because I am so used to having a book in my hand when I read or read out loud to my students. I enjoy browsing the book summaries on Amazon, so that was one of the first things I did when I turned it on. I was impressed with the number of books that are available for download and began wishing that I could use it in my classroom. So, I started to investigate.
Did you know that you can download Kindle for PC and project books on your classroom's white board? When I saw this, I knew I was in luck because I do all of the literacy planning for my team. I looked mostly for free books that could be used, but from time also downloaded books that I had to pay for out of my pocket. I did a pretty detailed unit on George Washington and used Who Was George Washington? The kids loved using a Kindle book at school as many have parents who read books on a Kindle but aren't allowed to use them themselves. It didn't matter to them that we were viewing the book on a regular computer. In fact, a few parents even asked me how I was able to afford Kindles for everyone after their kids had gone home and talked about 'reading a Kindle book'!!!
I plan to take a look at what is offered by Amazon in the free book section from time to time to see what might be used in the classroom. You may want to do that, too!!!
