Part of what I do on this blog is recommend professional resources that help reinforce the best practices for teaching. I have several planned for the summer, but I would REALLY like to know what your favorite resources are. Leave me a comment with the title and the name of the author and tell why you recommend it.
Also, don't forget that my store on Teachers pay Teachers is still 20% off for the rest of the week, so go and grab what you need. If you look back at a few earlier posts you can see what my best sellers were.
I can't wait to read about your recommendations! Enjoy!

I absolutely love ANYTHING by Debbie Diller! She is so inspiring and makes me want to change my classroom to her fairytale :)

Do you have her math book? I like it, but it is a little 'too low level' for my second graders.
DeleteStrategies that Work: Teaching Comprehension for Understanding and Engagement is my favorite resource (Harvey & Goudvis). But the book I reread every year before school starts is Reading with Meaning (D. Miller) because it reminds me to build a community!

Have you seen the guided reading kit that Harvis and Goudvis have out? You can find it on Amazon. One of the teachers in my building has it and she loves it!
DeleteJayne, I am right along with you!! We are like soul mates! :0)
ReplyDeleteI adore Strategies that Work, anything by Fountas and Pinnell, Debbie Diller and Debbie Miller. I always do the Debbie Miller promise at the beginning of the year and it really helps set a tons of learning and friendship in my room.

Thank you for commenting!!! I love what you love!!!
DeleteI agree with everything listed above. Being a big fan of brain based learning, I also love... Teaching With the Brain in Mind by Eric Jensen, Research Based Strategies to Ignite Student Learning by Judy Willis, and How the Brain Learns by David Sousa.

I like READWRITETHINK.org as it is all free and has thousands of excellent resources. I used Debbie Miller, that was great. Teaching With the Brain in Mind is helpful in so many ways, including parent conferences. The Reading Lady.com has free reading plays, resources for teachers and so many wonderful free items. The National Council of Teachers of math has the best math interactives. FOSS science kits has free student interactives. And, STARFALL has a fabulous scope and sequence page with many free resources for teachers. Wisconsin has a great reading site, http://reading.ecb.org/ Thanks! Carolyn
ReplyDeleteI love Conscious Classroom Management by Rick Smith! It is an easy-read that details all of the ways we can better our management of the classroom! I laughed while reading and still pull it out when things are getting hectic in the classroom!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of that one! I'll have to look it up!
DeleteMy two recent discoveries are: Readicide and The Book Whisperer. They both have practical ideas that can be easily implemented in your classroom.
ReplyDeleteMore titles to look for! Are they easy reads??
DeleteI personally love anything by Ron Clark. He has inspiring ideas to try in the classroom and his books are so easy to read!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to find his books, too!! Brian, if you don't mind, can you share this post with the rooms for me?
ReplyDeleteI love Debbi Miller and all the above plus Nonfiction Matters by Stephanie Harvey, Mosaic of Thought by Keene and Zimmerman, Revise, Reflect and Retell by Linda Hoyt and all of Fountas and Pinnell.

My current favorite resource is the book Number Talks by Sherry Parrish. It's a great resource to help children build mental math and computation strategies. It is a great resource for K-5 teachers.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!

One of my favorites for teaching struggling readers is When Readers Struggle Teaching That Works by Pinnell and Fountas. Lots of solid ideas for teaching reading.
