Teaching Second Grade Writers

Here I am....safe and sound.  I survived my first day of school.  Well....the kids weren't there, but it was my first day of school nonetheless.  I am feeling okay!  I love our new principal....got to keep my same teammates...the future is looking great.

My teammates and I met earlier in the summer to discuss the Common Core and how we planned to implement it.  We discussed the attributes of 6 Traits and Lucy Calkin's theories of writing.  So, I decided to get one of her books on writing.  It's a wee little thing, but it is packed full of information.  And, better yet, I found out that it is part of a 'Help Desk' series and there are a lot of other books out there just like it!  It isn't the big mongo set that she has, but a little concise copy that is just write for me!

Basically, this little book is like a curriculum map for writing!!  And...we all know that Lucy Calkins is knee deep in Common Core and anything she writes is good....so....it is a done deal.  It is a great book!  I like being me, but boy do I wish I was her every once in a while when I am struggling to conference with my students, model writing, teach peer editing, etc.  Whooo.  All of that makes me head hurt.  So anyway, here is another book that I will be clinging to as this school year continues to unfold.

Good luck to you all!
