Common Core Evolution

Yes, folks, if you never believed in evolution before, do I have some news for you!  I know that some school systems across the country adopted the common core early this school year, and others have decided to phase it in by grade level.

Earlier I shared a Common Core book which mapped out literacy and writing.  It was the newest and best thing out on the market to use in order to plan during the summer to be ready to start a new school year with a new curriculum.  It was recommended by my literacy coach and it was all the talk out in the Common Core world.  Now, there is a new book on the horizon with a DIFFERENT CURRICULUM MAP!!!!!

Well, dearies, it seems that Heinemann is now about to release a book entitled Pathways to the Common Core:  Accelerating Achievement.  I have not read this book (like I have the other Common Core book that I mentioned) so I can not recommend it, but I can give you all of its juice details because of a flyer that I received from the nice publishers at Heinemann!  I am on their mailing list because of all of the materials that I have bought over the years, so I guess they figured they might as well tempt me once again, and I have to tell you, I really am tempted just because of all of the 'names' that were dropped in the flyer.

Written by Lucy Caulkins, Mary Erhenworth, and Christopher Lehman, this book sounds REALLY good.  I may just have to add this to my wishlist (can you tell where all of my money goes?).

On the inside cover of the flyer it says that it will help teachers "understand what the standards say and suggest, and what they didn't say."  Well, if you are like me, you are finding the Common Core to be much more than numbers or standards to document in your lesson plans (yes, we include the numbers for them, too!).  There is all kinds of underlying objectives that are not necessarily listed.  I guess the Common Core developers decided we should practice our inferencing skills so that we could draw conclusions!!!

This book is recommended by all sorts of educational movers and shakers that either helped write the curriculum, or whom will be responsible for delivering its message across our country through professional development.  I know you have been holding your breath to find out who they are, so here it goes:

Sally Hampton, Heidi Hayes Jacobs (I've had professional development with her and she is AMAZING and skillful), Stephanie Harvey, Ellin Kline, Kylene Beers, Tom Corcoran, Peter Johnston, Lester Laminack, Fritz Mosher, Gretchen Owocki, Meghan Berry, Liz Treteault, Dr. Tom Bulla, Rochelle DeMuccio, and Christine Capachi

The Pathways book is recommended for professional book studies and apparently Heinemann will be sending their presenters out far and wide to explain to us 'how to do it and how to do it right."

Heinemann will also have an online course that can be taken, so they have moved into the digital realm also.  If you would like more info about that go to digitalcampus.Heinemann.com.
